The Botswana Police Service has confirmed the successful recapture of a 50-year-old Zimbabwean national, Stella Sibanda, who escaped from lawful custody at Gaborone Women Prison on Tuesday, 4 February 2026.

Ms Sibanda is a murder remand in connection with a Gakuto murder case that occurred in 2025. Following her escape, security agencies launched coordinated operations which led to her swift apprehension in Gaborone.

She has since been returned to lawful custody and will continue to face the due process of the law.

The Botswana Police Service has commended the collaboration among security agencies and reassured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining law and order.
